RUSSELL M. FRYAR ARTIST’S STATEMENT & RESUME:
|
Through the ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting, I attempt to express the simple beauty of nature using a complex interplay of precise discipline and open hearted spontaneity. The passion I feel for this artistic process feeds in me a desire to pursue ongoing levels of technical and spiritual mastery. It is my desire to entertain, refresh and inspire joy in viewers as they travel the visual and emotional path through my paintings. The techniques I use have been consistently taught for thousands of years, from developing the composition, to preparing the organically based colors, to perfecting the spontaneous single strokes of Chinese brushes on rice paper. While brush painters may create beautiful lines and forms, the message and meaning of the painting must transcend form, emerging from the heart of the artist. It is this aspect of my work that I find most deeply satisfying. While I entered the art world as a teenager, my life as an artist really began after I retired from a successful career as financial officer of a rapidly growing multinational corporation. Far from routine accounting and financial operations, my right brain creativity was in constant demand in bringing together unique solutions to complex goals in the business world. I believe my paintings are yet another expression of the combination of meticulous practices with intuition and creative thinking. During my teen years, I was truly fortunate to have been encouraged by a very talented art teacher who affirmed my potential and planted the seed that still flourishes today. I have benefited from numerous art classes, most recently at The University of California in Los Angeles as well as painting and traveling in China with internationally known Chinese brush artist Ning Yeh. My paintings have appeared in multiple juried competitions, gallery shows, individual shows and art festivals.
